Once a maritime super power, Amalfi is a Spanish – looking little town with tall white houses built on slopes facing the sea in a wonderful setting. The Islamic – looking layout of the town is characterised by windin galleyways, staircases and vaulted passages which open out onto little squares. The main attractionis the Duomo di Sant’Andrea, founded in the 9C, the cathedralis an example of the Oriental splendour favoured by maritime cities.
Sitting high in the hills above Amalfi, refined Ravello is a polished town almost entirely dedicated to tourism. Between June and mid – September the Music Festival turns much of the town centre into a stage. The main attractions are Villa Rufolo famed for its beautiful cascading gardens and the 11th – century Villa Cimbrone with fabulous views from the delightful terrace.
Pompeii is Europe’s most compelling archaeological site. The eruption of Vesuvius wasn’t the first disaster to strike the Roman town. In AD 63 a massive earthquake hit the city, causing wide spread damage and the evacuation of much of the 20,000 – strong population. Many had not returned when the Volcano blew its top on 24 August AD 79, burying the city under a layer of lapilli.
Please note: Entrance fees, meals and drinks are not included.
